Some Of My Fitness Questions Answered – A Questionairre

By |July 26th, 2013|

Since I’m gearing up for some interesting workout options for my upcoming trip to New York, I figured I’d do the Fitness Questionairre recently posted on Brittany’s My Own Balance and Kimberly Anne’s Manifest Yourself.

Wunda Wednesday – What is the WundaFormer?

Welcome to Week 2 of Wunda Wednesdays!  From May 1st through July 1st, I’ll be participating in a 60 Day Challenge with WundaBar Pilates.  I’ll be taking 3-4 classes per week in exchange for documenting my progress weekly here on the blog.

This week I want to give an overview about Joseph Pilates and his contributions to the components of the mothership of WundaBar Pilates, the WundaFormer.  The WundaFormer is the unique machine that brings together a modern combination of the best features of some of the most well known machines used in contemporary Pilates today. Core Strength Reinvented – A WundaBar Pilates 60 Day Challenge

By |May 1st, 2013|

WB Reformer

Since mid-February, I’ve been utilizing Pilates Physical Therapy to strengthen my recurring L4/L5, L5/S1 lower back injury.  My injury has derailed me from 4 different half marathons but Pilates has been instrumental in helping me to begin to develop some of the core strength I need to be as active as I want to be.

Now that my physical therapist has cleared me to take outside classes, I’ve decided to work with WundaBar Pilates on the next phase of my rehabilitation.

WundaBar Pilates has allowed me to take 3-4 group reformer classes each week for the next 60 days in exchange for documenting my experience here through a series I’m calling WundaWednesdays.

Not Even Two Steps Forward

By |February 18th, 2013|

Last week, after a short bout of improvement in rehab for my injury (which included a whole 4 minutes of treadmill running), my back started to hurt terribly after a cycling class and PT session.

On Friday, my physical therapist dealt me a big blow: my new pain was indicative of poor healing progression and he was changing my course of treatment from running related therapy to more intensified core work through Pilates.

To add insult to (literal) injury, I was also told to stop engaging my new fitness passion, indoor cycling, because it was likely exacerbating my injury (of course this was right after I finally purchased some cycling shoes).

This was a one-two punch so hard that I almost cried right there in his office.  I waited until I got into the car to sob uncontrollably.  Great first day of being 43 – not even two steps forward and one step back, I was (and still am) pretty upset. […]

Oranges Can Boost Your Mood?

By |January 7th, 2013|

I’m still getting used to the fact that I live in California.  I still marvel at the fact that I get to see this when I wake up in the morning in my very own backyard:

Navel Oranges

Seeing orange trees all around does makes me happy.  I’m used to seeing grey and snow (and sometimes grey snow) at this time of year in New York.

However, as I’ve mentioned, I’m also trying not go down Depression Road with this back injury.  I’ve been more than frustrated and in an attempt to make myself feel productive (since I can’t work toward running the #13in2013 rightthissecond), I decided to tackle an attainable goal, improve nutritional intake.  With nutrition, it’s easy to improve intake at just the next meal.  You don’t have to wait for the next day, the next week or the next month. I’m a Family Guy fan.  My first born (black pug), Griffin, is named after the show.  Stewie’s refrain is my mantra right now.

I’ve been depressed about not being able to exercise due to my back injury.  I’ve injured and re-injured my back so often since 2004 it’s ridiculous.

I’ve had to withdraw 3 half marathons in the past 3 years: NYC Half Marathon (2012), Diva Half Marathon (2011), and the  More Magazine/Fitness Magazine (2010) due to reinjury but 2013 will be the year of completing #13in2013. […]
