A Look Back at 2015

By |December 23rd, 2015|

2015 has been both wonderful and challenging.  As a blogger, it’s been incredibly inconsistent but as a human being, it’s been very action packed.  Instead of dwelling on not fully meeting all of the goals that I set for myself in my Goals/Resolutions/Intentions post (GoReIn2015)I’m taking a look […]

Surviving and Thriving After A Fitness Injury

By |November 3rd, 2014|

Hello All!  I haven’t disappeared.

I know I haven’t been posting consistently but there are some personal things that have required my undivided attention lately and it’s kept me from blogging.

However, you can find my latest post,

New Month, Old Injury

By |October 1st, 2014|

Welcome to October – the month of Halloween, the true ushering in of Autumn, all of the pumpkin (please make it stop, I’m just not a fan of the pumpkin onslaught) and the revisitation of my back injury.  This post could have been titled Oops, I Did It Again but […]

Getting Over The Out-And-Back Run

By |September 25th, 2013|

Running in LA is different than it is in New York.  The town where I live in LA is near where the fictional characters of The Big Bang Theory live.  If I knew I could see Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Wolowitz on the streets near me, I might be motivated […]

Dancinerate – A Fitness Class While Recovering From Injury

By |April 26th, 2013|

Dancinerate posterI’ve been exploring fitness options while healing from my back injury.  When I was invited to attend a Dancinerate class at Equinox Sports Club in West LA with dance and fitness expert Ilyse Baker, I decided to be daring and try it.

I love to exercise and I love music but I can’t dance.  Long ago I used to go to clubs – and do the New Wave step and rock – but I am very uncoordinated.  Hence, being injured numerous times.

The extent of my dancing is more “Popcorn” by Hot Butter (as a child) and the “Electric Slide” (during the drunk college years) than anything requiring ability.  I’m lucky that I had Carolyn from ThisTalkAintCheap.com with me.  Together, we won a contest at the #HATES event in January. I knew she’d be good support if I literally broke a leg in class.

Ilyse didn’t look like the typical tall and breakably thin dancer – she was short (like me!) and muscular and I found that inspiring.

Ilyse was a fun and a skilled teacher – she made the routine easy enough for a klutz like me to follow (most of the time) by breaking down the routines and repeating the moves multiple times.  She also named the moves catchy things like “put on your jacket” or “drive the car” to make the workout fun and accessible.

I loved that my recent earworm “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (I’m slow on current music) was one of the songs in class as well.

#13in2013, fitness, sports injury

The picture to the right is not fake.  This is a real place in Temecula, CA.  Honestly, I saw the photo and I thought it was a joke.  However, I also feel like I could be their next patient.

In the past I’ve been to kinesiologists (Debbie Parsons in NYC is fantastic), PT, a well-known NYC sports medicine doctor and most recently an acupuncturist but I’m still an active participant in the injury and reinjury circuit with this back injury.

Last week I saw a new orthopedic surgeon (a runner and triathlete himself) and he said that I didn’t need surgery but recommended physical therapy.  The doctor said it’s likely I can run in the future but that this injury will recur.

Back Again

By |December 16th, 2012|

After the Sandy Hook incident on Friday, it’s been difficult to write about anything else other than being thankful and/or sad.  Earlier this week I had planned on writing about a recent health journey but that will again be delayed until later this week because I now have something more pressing….my (lower back) injury is back again.

I have been in a cycle of back injury and attaining fitness for a number of years.  I’ve had to pull out of 3 half marathons in as many years and I was on a self-directed program to get myself strong once and for all.  Hence my #13in2013 declaration earlier this week.
