I’m a Family Guy fan. My first born (black pug), Griffin, is named after the show. Stewie’s refrain is my mantra right now.
I’ve been depressed about not being able to exercise due to my back injury. I’ve injured and re-injured my back so often since 2004 it’s ridiculous.
I’ve had to withdraw 3 half marathons in the past 3 years: NYC Half Marathon (2012), Diva Half Marathon (2011), and the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine (2010) due to reinjury but 2013 will be the year of completing #13in2013.
To prevent myself from going further down the rabbit hole of depression while I recover, in the vein of #13in2013:
I decided to remind myself of 13 of my previous running victories as self-motivation.
1. Awesome 80’s Run 5K Pasadena (9/1/12): 425th place: 30:48/5K), 9:56/mile pace
2. SPT Run (12/1/12 ): 190th place: 31:03/5K; 10:00/mile pace
3. Prospect Park Turkey Trot (11/22/12): 1731th place: 57:34/5M; 11:31/mile pace
4. Prospect Park Turkey Trot (11/24/2011): 1422th place: 51:39/5M; 10:20/mile pace
5. Prospect Park Turkey Trot (11/2010): 1373th place: 52:55/5M; 10:35/mile pace
6. NYRR Jingle Bell Jog 6K (12/10/11): 3743rd place: 37:58/6K; 10:11 mile/pace
7. Fitness Magazine, Mind, Body… 4M (9/17/2011): 1392nd place: 38:24/4M; 9:36/mile pace

10. NYRRC Twosome 10K (4/24/99): 693rd place: 56:40/10K; 9:08/mile pace
11. NYRR Queens Half Marathon (4/18/99): 1469th place: 02:09:15/13.1M; 9:51/mile pace
12. NYRR Brooklyn Half Marathon (3/6/99): 1748th place: 02:13:36/13.1M; 10:11/mile pace
13. SD Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon (5/23/1999): 8616th place: 5:20:15/26.2M; 12:13/mile pace
Over 14 years, I’ve run more races but this list is enough to show me what my body has already done for me.
I’m planning to turn this setback into a comeback – #13in2013! San Diego: June 2nd.
Glad you’re not giving up. Hopefully your back will heal enough so you can complete everything you want to this year.
You know I can totally relate. Injuries are frustrating but you have accomplished so much and you will heal. We both will (although I’m currently slipping down the rabbit hole and feeling frustrated with how my body is feeling lately). I am convinced that 2013 will be amazing for both of us.
Thank you. I will run, walk or crawl this half. I can’t let my kid see me bail out if another half marathon. I need to show him (and myself) how powerful sheer motivation can be.
Cheers to a strong 2013! Take care of yourself as well. Your body is giving you signs, heed them (please).
