Core Strength Reinvented – A WundaBar Pilates 60 Day Challenge

WB Reformer

Since mid-February, I’ve been utilizing Pilates Physical Therapy to strengthen my recurring L4/L5, L5/S1 lower back injury.  My injury has derailed me from 4 different half marathons but Pilates has been instrumental in helping me to begin to develop some of the core strength I need to be as active as I want to be.

Now that my physical therapist has cleared me to take outside classes, I’ve decided to work with WundaBar Pilates on the next phase of my rehabilitation.

WundaBar Pilates has allowed me to take 3-4 group reformer classes each week for the next 60 days in exchange for documenting my experience here through a series I’m calling WundaWednesdays.

A New Yorker's Favorite Snack

I’ve been back from NYC for over two weeks now and I’m embarrassed that I’ve barely written a lick about my trip and the wonderful time I had seeing friends and enjoying the city that is home in my heart.  Let’s face it, Los Angeles is a fabulous city as well but there are somethings that you can only get in NYC – like the $1 packet of 3 whole wheat fig bars, my favorite snack in the world.

Sounds Of Saturday – Duran Duran/Rio

Roger Taylor of Duran Duran definitely has a cherry ice-cream smile in this shot, don’t you agree?  My “second banana” of the group just turned 53 yesterday and celebrated by DJ’ing a gig in Chicago.

In honor of RT’s birthday, today’s Sounds Of Saturday is a live clip of “Rio” recorded during the Red Carpet Massacre tour.  The clip opens with Roger and happens to show him quite a few times throughout the performance which is nice since even with the closest of concert seats, this cute guy is always back behind the drums. Dancinerate – A Fitness Class While Recovering From Injury

Dancinerate posterI’ve been exploring fitness options while healing from my back injury.  When I was invited to attend a Dancinerate class at Equinox Sports Club in West LA with dance and fitness expert Ilyse Baker, I decided to be daring and try it.

I love to exercise and I love music but I can’t dance.  Long ago I used to go to clubs – and do the New Wave step and rock – but I am very uncoordinated.  Hence, being injured numerous times.

The extent of my dancing is more “Popcorn” by Hot Butter (as a child) and the “Electric Slide” (during the drunk college years) than anything requiring ability.  I’m lucky that I had Carolyn from ThisTalkAintCheap.com with me.  Together, we won a contest at the #HATES event in January. I knew she’d be good support if I literally broke a leg in class.

Ilyse didn’t look like the typical tall and breakably thin dancer – she was short (like me!) and muscular and I found that inspiring.

Ilyse was a fun and a skilled teacher – she made the routine easy enough for a klutz like me to follow (most of the time) by breaking down the routines and repeating the moves multiple times.  She also named the moves catchy things like “put on your jacket” or “drive the car” to make the workout fun and accessible.

I loved that my recent earworm “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (I’m slow on current music) was one of the songs in class as well.

Boston – A Good Reason To Do Your First 5K

All over the country, runs have been scheduled in honor of the tragedy that took place at the Boston Marathon.  Pavement Runner, a fellow runner and blogger put together #BostonStrong – a chance for runners to come together in their own community and run for Boston.

In New York, I saw so many bloggers and friends getting ready to do #BostonStrongNYC, headed up by the amazing Abby at Run Stronger Everyday.  I was sad not to be able to run with my fellow New Yorkers since I just got a taste of how wonderful it is to run in NYC just 2 weeks ago during my triumphant Kick Ass 5K.

All was not lost because a member of the Pasadena Pacers running club organized the Unity Run at the iconic Pasadena Rose Bowl and I was lucky enough to participate with three 5K first timers, my husband, Jay, the newly minted 6 year old, Wild Boy and our pug, Griffin. […]

Balance – Do You Need A Social Media Intervention?

I’m terrible at keeping balance in my life.  I’ve talked about my balancing act of “All Or Nothing” It really is my underlying motto with food, exercise, television (damn you Netflix for having all of those full seasons of easily digestible television to keep me up all night) and most recently, social media.

Striving for balance between living real life and social media seems to be a struggle all around:   […]
