Made in celebration of my dating anniversary with my husband, Jay (2/5/91) from The Turtles “Happy Together”)
It’s February, the month of LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. It’s a very special month for me – it’s my birthday and the month that I started dating my husband, Jay, over 20 years ago. Yes, we celebrate our dating anniversary. It might sound silly but it’s a sweet tradition that I adore.
Jay did something very unexpected this February and proposed “The Valentine Love Challenge Book Assignment”: we each choose a book for the other to read this month. I thought this was a scary but brilliant idea so I decided to share it with all of you.
Join me for “The Valentine Love Challenge Book Assignment”
You and your spouse/partner/friend will choose a book for each other to read by February 28th and on Friday, March 1st, you can blog/Tweet/FB/comment here about what book you assigned, what book you were assigned and how both parties felt about the book and the challenge overall.
My “Valentine Love Challenge Book Assignment” from Jay is Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card (Jay likes Science Fiction) and the book I assigned to Jay is: Wonderland Avenue: Tales of Glamour and Excess by Danny Sugerman, former manager of The Doors (I like books about addiction and dark places).
Looking forward to hearing if your love (or friendship) survived the challenge (and what all of you read/assigned) on March 1st!
Jay never read WONDERLAND AVENUE?! I loved that. Great challenge – let’s see if KL is up for it!
Thank you for the comment. I was secretly hoping my very well read friend might do this ;). Xoxo
Sounds fun. Unfortunately, my husband HATES to read books and would NEVER get past page 1.
Oh well. Maybe with a friend instead? It’s going to be interesting to see if I can get through the book Jay picked for me.
Do ‘books on cd’ qualify 🙂 ?
Absolutely Raquel! Any way to get the fiction/non-fiction in works for me. I’d be thrilled to have you join the challenge!
Sounds great! I’m reading “End Emotional Eating” by Dr. Jennifer Taitz.
Sounds like a great book. I happen to like Geneen Roth books regarding emotional eating as well. If you haven’t read her books, give her a try.
Thank you for the comment!
Cool challenge, Melissa! I just saw you’re a transplant to my side of the country. how are you enjoying Southern California so far? Pretty different, right?
Fawn, I’m loving it. 80 degrees in February to celebrate my birthday (yesterday) certainly didn’t hurt! Hope to see if you and your man participate in my challenge!
That could be very interesting with us. I dread to think what he’d pick for me, except that he knows I wouldn’t read something gory or scary.
I’m with Carolyn…I have a non reading husband. What a neat idea!
In the days when we read so much at work and on our smartphones, it’s easy not to want to read. I feel like since becoming a parent reading is not a pleasure anymire but a chore and I’m trying to rediscover it!
Robin, let me know if you and your husband try the challenge. I know that my sci-fi pic from my husband is going to be a hurdle but one never knows….
I love this idea but It takes me at least a month to read a book and my husband even longer! However, I’m really interested in checking out Wonderland Avenue! I’ll let you know in June how is was!! 🙂
I understand completely. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to do this challenge. If you do wind up reading the book, lmk what you think whenever. I love it but I have a strange attraction to books about addiction and recovery.
Hi Melissa, I found your post from the Whole Lotta Love Linkup and I love this post! My husband and I read all the time. We have at times made challenges like this too. One year for Christmas, we had to buy each other a classic, but because he used to own a bookstore and has read so many books, I had a hard time finding something he hadn’t read until I came on The Peloponnesian War. Never heard of it? No one has! (Just kidding you big time history readers) Anyway, he was greatly surprised. Since you like addiction and recovery, have you read any of Mary Karr? “Lit” is really good! Great finding your blog! Check mine out at http://www.janeannthompson.com and I’ll be seeing you around! Have a great day!
Jane, thank you for your comment. I will definitely check out your blog and Mary Karr. I hope you take part in the challenge and let me know how it goes. It sounds like it would be hard to give your husband something he may not have read – I liked your Cama challenge too.
Thanks for the pingback and I look forward to getting to know you and your blog!
