Today’s Tune is Everclear’s “Wonderful”.  Every single time I hear this song, I get chills.  I’m a child of divorce but I don’t remember the circumstances before the divorce.  I don’t remember my parents ever being together so in some ways I’m very lucky.  Many people aren’t lucky in that respect.

A few of Wild Boy’s friends have parents that are getting divorced and every time Jay and I have an argument, I can see that he gets nervous that it’s the beginning of the end.  I can’t imagine how scary that must be for a child.  We have lots of discussions in our house about how disagreements are not the precursor to divorce but that people are allowed to have differing opinions.

I know Art Alexakis (a child of divorced parents) of Everclear wrote this song for his daughter when he was splitting with his wife.  I think the way he gets inside the head of child during this difficult time is nothing short of brilliant.  There are some profound lines throughout this song but this one stops my heart every time.  It has special meaning now that I’m a parent.

Everclear, Wonderful, divorce

One of the best written lyrics in music, IMHO.

I love the juxtaposition of this song in every way – the hard and brash guitar with soft and heartfelt words make this song a modern classic in my mind.  I love Everclear and this song is definitely one of my favorites.   I hope to see them live one of these days.  They were recently in LA and I missed the show so for now, video will have to do.   I hope you enjoy this clip too.

What lyric of a song gets you every time?
