I am an athlete wanna-be.  I ran a marathon in 2009 (which is a story for another post at another time for sure) and various other small races after that time but for the most part I’ve been on a terrible cycle of training for a races and then getting injured.  I’ve pulled out of 3 half-marathons in the past 3 years due to injury and re-injury.

Start line for 5K

This past weekend there was a 5K/10K and 1K Kids Race in my new CA town.  I figured it would be an easy race and great way to start off December fitness-wise.  The Wild Boy had been dying to do another race (He did one last September and loved it) and this seemed perfect.

I’ve had some pretty lousy runs as of late (my 5M Turkey Trot was an absolute bust) but I thought my last few months of indoor cycling and my recent brick (15 mins cycling followed by 30 minutes of running) was great this past week so I was actually looking forward to my 5K race this Saturday.

Let it be known that while I’m not even close to a triathlete, I’ve been pretty proud to be able to do a brick relatively injury-free as of late.

This 5K was not going to be crowning glory to usher in December with fitness gold.  It wasn’t quite the washout my Turkey Trot was but I had very little energy and wound up walking a short while (which was frustrating given my great 3 miler this week), hence my title for the post “thick as a brick” (Cue the Jethro Tull flute here).  Despite being not my best run, it was still great to see my family at the finish line.

The Wild Boy had a fantastic time (he even made it into the local Patch story).  He got to stretch with 2 Tiger mascots on the field to warm up, raced around fantastic track, got a medal and inadvertently, did a brick of his own!  My amazing kid did a 1K race and then did an hour of martial arts class.

Perhaps this is a sign telling me that I need a little more brick and a little less thick in 2013.
