AC-Cassette-USA-Roger_DaltreyAlmost 20 years ago today, I made it to Carnegie Hall.  Not because of my musical prowess (I have none) or for a Duran show  (I don’t think they’ve ever played there) but as an assistant to the producer of the “Daltrey Sings Townshend” 2 day event celebrating Roger Daltrey’s 50th birthday.

It was my first real job out of college.  I was lucky enough during that time to talk to Roger Daltrey on a a regular basis and to have him sing “Happy Birthday” to me is a cherished memory.  I now curse time for not having (reasonably sized) cell phones with audio and video available so I could replay it at will.  Damn!

This show had a plethora of well-known musicians involved – Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, Eddie Vedder, Sinead O’Connor, Lou Reed, David Sanborn, Alice Cooper, Linda Perry,  The Spin Doctors and The Chieftains.  As a naive 24 year old, I didn’t recognize the greatness until many years later.

The show has been immortalized via CD and now DVD (it was originally a Pay-Per-View event) – if ever get the chance to watch this concert, if you look hard at the first few rows, you can see me in the audience (in green) with some of my friends.

I can’t believe that there was a YouTube video available to share.  This version of 5:15 was mind-blowing:
