First of all HOORAY that you are speaking at BlogFest!!!!! WOW! That is truly amazing my friend. Second, I think you have the dates wrong…it’s July and not June, right?? Third, I can’t even enter since I will be on vacation with my family during that time and I would end up divorced if I left to go to a blog conference! I truly hope to be there next year!!!!
so want to be there! The most interesting piece of nutrition advice… That cravings can sometimes mean your body is low in a specific nutrient.
Yah! I am excited, as I will be in California that same weekend 🙂
Congratulations on speaking at Blog Fest! How exciting. I would love to win a ticket – especially since it’s in LA this year. Have you been to the IDEA World part of the show? If so, how is it?
I’ve learned a lot! Here’s one that I just learned for new moms – goat milk is closer to human milk than cow milk. Ok one more – while I’ve been on a juice cleanse and have felt pretty good, they are unnecessary as your own body can “detox” on its own. WHUT.
Yay for your speaking engagement!! I’ll be watching the live Twitter feed during your session!!
The most interesting piece of nutrition advice I’ve ever learned is that FAT is not the enemy. This blew my mind when I got serious about weight loss that my dietitian didn’t care about fat… it was sugar and carbs I needed to be mindful of.
The most interesting nutrition advice I’ve learned is that weight is simply a result of calories in, calories out. That being the case, you can still enjoy your favorite treats while still losing weight. Of course, it’s not healthy to eat dessert all the time, so it’s best to enjoy in moderation – still, it’s nice to know you don’t have to give up everything you love to get healthier.
drink LOTS of water and do not weigh yourself daily
The most interesting fact for me lately is that our bodies only need about 10% protein from our diet!
The fact that we think we need soooo much protein is always enlightening when you’re fitness oriented.
Drinking lots of water is definitely a good one. I personally don’t even believe in weighing yourself weekly unless you are on a big weight loss journey (why should a number tell you how to feel about yourself?!).
Kayley: I wish everyone understood that incorporating things you like to eat makes the way you eat a lifestyle vs. a “diet”. While I don’t believe that all calories are equal, I do believe that deprivation is definitely not a way to make anyone happy. Eating should be pleasurable as well as nourishing.
Alyssa: You have no idea how many people are afraid of fat – now they’re afraid of carbs and sugar too but learning about healthy carbohydrates (vs. processed ones) and natural vs. added sugars can make a world of difference. Learning about healthy fats vs no-so-healthy ones is something that should help people feel better and more empowered about their choices.
Thank you for the encouragement about the speaking.
The goat milk/cow milk thing is an interesting one. The juice cleanse/detox one is something that needs to be shouted from the rooftops (huge sticking point for me – but you knew that already 😉 ).
The IDEAWorld part of the show is interesting. I didn’t go to sessions last year but they looked great. I may attend an RD session but I’m not sure if I”ll have the time. If you can make it, I absolutely recommend it!
No divorce please! Thanks again for the heads up while I was on vacation!
I hope you will be there next year!!
Bri: Would love for your to be at BlogFest but I’ll let you know your nutrition advice piece isn’t actually true – – it is only in one sense, iron deficiency is sometimes displayed as pica (eating non-nutritive substances like chalk, ice, laundry starch) and can often be found in pregnant women and young children. All other cravings aren’t nutrient based (hint – this is a point I planned to address at BlogFest and you’ve definitely sealed the deal on why I should – thank you!).
Hope to see you Brittany!
There are so many interesting facts, I feel like I learn something new every day, especially now that I’m enrolled in the health coaching program at IIN.
Hey Melissa!
How awesome you’re doing a giveaway for this. I agree with the comments above about more sporadic weigh-ins (I try to do only once a month) and would like to add-on to the comment about fat not being the enemy. I loved learning about good fats versus bad fats – it really helped destigmatize a couple foods that I used to avoid (I.e. olive oil and avocados), and helps me put together more balanced meals.
Timeisha: I’d love to hear more about your IIN experience and why you chose that route. Thanks for stopping by!
No problem, I found your blog through the healthy Lady bloggers group on facebook. I know a few people who attended IIN and loved the experience, and I had been wanting to attend for a few years but it wasn’t the right time. I really wanted to learn more about nutrition and other holistic approaches to health and wellness, and so it seemed like a good fit for what I’m currently doing and I liked that it was an online program. I also wanted to be “certified” so that I can put that on my “resume”. A lot of people ask for certifications, so I figured this would get me in the door. I hope to continue building upon my education as well.
That’s awesome you’re speaking!!! Congratulations!!! I would absolutely love the chance to come hear your presentation and take in all that’s being offered!! 🙂
David: I’m definitely on board with the infrequent weighing and the good fats. Thanks for entering the giveaway. I hope to see you at BlogFest!
I like the holistic curriculum of IIN but as an RD, I don’t like that students are able to see clients before they’re even finished with their training.
I do wish that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics opened their curriculum to more integrative nutrition practice education as well. I’ve sought it on my own because I do think there is a place for it but overall, I’m happy that I went the RD route. Once you graduate, if you ever want an RD in your arsenal for reference, I’m available.
Best of luck to you in the giveaway Kaella! Thanks for entering!
Eat more fiber, keeps you full longer 😉
So exciting-I REALLY would love to attend. Fat is good! We need to stop with non-fat things because fat doesn’t make you fat!
How exciting for you!!! When I was younger – that healthy fats are good for you!!! 🙂 I was young & stupid way back then & avoided all fat!
This is so awesome!! I just found your blog from the Sweatpink Ambassadors FB page.
I would love to win one of these tickets!! My fingers are crossed! 🙂 I think your talk is going to be great and will bring up so many important topics. I don’t own a scale and I am happy with that. I agree with the comments above – FAT is GOOD!
With all 3 of my kiddos, I introduced goat’s milk first (before cow’s milk) and it was such a pleasant, easy experience.
Have a wonderful Tuesday!!
A great one! On average people only consume 10g fiber per day when they should be consuming 25g!
The fat concept is one that really needs to be taught thoroughly. Good fats vs low/non-fat (take out the fat and add sugar to replace it).
We were all once not knowledgable about fats, right?
Natalie: Thanks for entering! That fat is good concept is definitely a good one! I do hope to meet you at BlogFest!
Hi Melissa,
I’m very interested on these ticket but unfortunately, I read this article so late. I wonder if there would be something like this next year?
Zak: Sorry for the delay in responding. I’m sure there will be ticket giveaways closer to the 2016 IDEA Conference in July.
