Welcome to my new series featuring some fabulous females! With no disrespect meant to the men in my life (both actual and virtual), this current series is all about Girl Power.
We all know extraordinary women and I’m thrilled to feature some that you may or may not know already – not all of them are bloggers but it’s their stories, words, actions and journeys that have given me the much needed push to stop talking about my dream of launching a nutrition private practice but to get off my ass and do it (in 2014)!
Today, I begin the Friday’s Featured Female series with Kathryn Moos, a professional athlete motivated by nutrition to become an entrepreneur. It seems fitting to have Kathryn kick off the series since she named her first product, VROU which means “woman” in Afrikaans.
How I got my health back… I created my own drink!
Two years ago, I left my job and set out to transform and simplify the way women get nutrients. And this summer, I launched our first product, VROU, a Multivitamin drink with Electrolytes and Antioxidants that came as a result of life’s prior experiences. As a professional athlete, I had access to the best nutrients available. Always full of energy, hydrated, and nourished, I never felt healthier. I had to be, or my performance would suffer.
After retiring however, and working as a financial analyst in NYC, I found myself yawning more often. My morning runs became slower. I couldn’t do as many pushups or pull-ups. And my overall energy level just wasn’t the same. I knew part of this feeling came from me being constantly dehydrated because drinking water all day was about as boring as the numbers I was crunching. (I later learned that over 76% of Americans are chronically dehydrated!). I guess I’m not the only one who just can’t get around to drinking more than 9 cups of water a day!!
I was still trying to figure out why I didn’t feel quite as vibrant, especially since I always ate healthy meals. I then heard Dr. Oz claim that up to 90% of the population does not get the necessary daily nutrients from a healthy diet alone and that supplementation is needed. This must be it, I thought, because I never liked taking pills. Swallowing them is a pain if I remember to take them, and when I do, they frequently upset my stomach. This discovery made me think back to my time as a professional athlete, and how the one difference between then and now was that I used to have access to so many products that were nutrient rich.
The problem was that these products were not readily available for the general public. So I left my job in a pursuit to put the most essential nutrients that women need into one bottle (Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D, and Folic acid). It also contains vitamins A, C, E, K, and vitamins B3 (Niacin), B5 (Pantothenic Acid), B6, and B12 along with Potassium. It gets better! VROU is naturally flavored, uses no artificial sweeteners or preservatives; is ONLY 5 calories with NO SUGAR! The result is something I am very proud of, and a product that Whole Foods’ Northeast Region picked up only two months after I launched. Drinking at least one bottle of VROU every morning when I wake up and having one after my workout has brought me back to feeling like a professional athlete again! It was a long road with many hurdles along the way, but I am thrilled that this is available for any woman to drink.
You can learn more about how VROU has partnered with the non-profit organization, Girls On The Run to use “the power of running to empower and change the way girls see themselves and their opportunities” through the crowdfunding link above.
Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. I have received product from VROU to sample but this post is to tell Kathryn’s story, it is not an endorsement by me as a Registered Dietitian.
However, as an RD, I do advise that if you are on medication or have a medical condition, to determine the possibility of drug-nutrient interactions with your pharmacist or medical professional before introducing any product with vitamin or mineral supplementation into your daily regimen.
