Thankful Thursday – Ride For Jon

Fitness, 31 Day Challenge

Inspiration

This is Jon Dephouse, a 32 year old triathlete, priest, husband, and father of two young boys who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Pleomorphic Rhabdomyosarcoma in October 2012.

Jon is my neighbor and when his wife, Sarah Lynn, told me of Jon’s diagnosis I felt the need to do something (however small) to help so with the help of some friends at The Cycle Annex in South Pasadena (where both Jon and Sarah Lynn were former instructors and where I take indoor cycling classes), Team Dephouse and the Ride For Jon was born.

13 in 2013

 I think I’ve made my New Year’s Resolution for 2013 already.  13 in 2013 – 13.1 miles that is.

I will Run Like A Girl. Photo by HA!Designs Art By Heather.

I’ve had to pull out of 3 half marathons due to injury (and reinjury) in the last 3 years but I think all signs point to the 4th time being a charm (I didn’t even realize the pun as it formed in my head until I looked at the above picture and decided not to edit it.  I’m cheesy and I’m ok with it).

Now I must decide where to run.   […]

The Balancing Act of All or Nothing

Fitness,

I have always had trouble with balance in every sense of the word.  I’m a klutz extraordinaire but I’m an all or nothing type of girl in every aspect of my life.  I either don’t sleep at all or I’m exhausted.  I need to workout every day or I’m a slug on the couch.  I can be a social butterfly or I “need to be alone”.  I give with my whole heart in everything I do.  It’s a problem being so polar sometimes.  It may be the reason I’ve burnt myself out of most every job I’ve ever had. Thick As A Brick

I am an athlete wanna-be.  I ran a marathon in 2009 (which is a story for another post at another time for sure) and various other small races after that time but for the most part I’ve been on a terrible cycle of training for a races and then getting injured.  I’ve pulled out of 3 half-marathons in the past 3 years due to injury and re-injury.

Start line for 5K

This past weekend there was a 5K/10K and 1K Kids Race in my new CA town.  I figured it would be an easy race and great way to start off December fitness-wise.  The Wild Boy had been dying to do another race (He did one last September and loved it) and this seemed perfect.

I’ve had some pretty lousy runs as of late (my 5M Turkey Trot was an absolute bust) but I thought my last few months of indoor cycling and my recent brick (15 mins cycling followed by 30 minutes of running) was great this past week so I was actually looking forward to my 5K race this Saturday.

Let it be known that while I’m not even close to a triathlete, I’ve been pretty proud to be able to do a brick relatively injury-free as of late.
