Sounds of Saturday – The Alarm
This week’s Sounds of Saturday is the amazing band The Alarm. I am ashamed that I haven’t featured one of my favorite bands until now. I’ve been lucky enough to see the band and Mike Peter’s (the band’s lead singer) live more than once. His voice is even more stellar in person than on record.
“Strength” is one of The Alarm’s most well known anthems and is the name-sake for Mike Peter’s cancer foundation, lovehopestrength.org. Mike Peters is a leukemia survivor and has taken his love of music and fervent desire […]
A Fly (Runner) Girl – Julie Flygare
I have a new inspiration, Julie Flygare. She is the author of the book, “Wide Awake And Dreaming: A Memoir of Narcolepsy”. I never thought that a book that I downloaded to keep me occupied on a train ride would rouse me with the story of a smart, strong female runner, blogger and yogi.
I’ve always liked books about people who find their way in the face of an obstacle of some sort – addiction, poor parent guidance, financial struggles, injuries, disabilities or in the case of Julie Flygare, the neurological disease narcolepsy, which she was diagnosed with in her twenties while in law school.
I have my own sleep issues (I’m an insomniac) but I knew very little about narcolepsy and nothing about cataplexy – the sudden loss of muscle tone often brought on by strong emotions.
By reading Julie’s book, I learned more about the neurological autoimmune sleep disorder that affects 1 in 2,000 Americans (including talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel ). The disorder is caused by the brain’s inability to maintain normal sleep and wake cycles. See here for more Narcolepsy Quick Facts from Julie’s blog. […]
(Rock 'n') Roll With The Changes
Sunday, February 17th was the Pasadena Rock ‘n’ Roll Mini Marathon (aka 5K). This was definitely a race that I planned to run but my PT directed otherwise and I was pretty disappointed.
To add to my already lousy mood, I was missing my regular finish line cheering squad (Jay and Wild Boy). I told them to stay home due to ridiculously early parking requirements (I’m going to blame the early start time for helping me to forget my sunglasses and hat as well).
The morning was cool but sunny. Before the race, I got to see my very race-happy friends Joan and Michele from The Cycle Annex and the Pasadena Tri Club who were running the Half Marathon and I was lucky enough to get the chance to meet the very speedy and inspirational, Rock ‘n’ Blogger, PavementRunner at the start line (maybe he’ll post the picture he took of us).
I had some wonderful inspiration for this race, my new friend from my cycling class, Jericca – she was running her first 5K with her nephew. […]
Not Even Two Steps Forward
Last week, after a short bout of improvement in rehab for my injury (which included a whole 4 minutes of treadmill running), my back started to hurt terribly after a cycling class and PT session.
On Friday, my physical therapist dealt me a big blow: my new pain was indicative of poor healing progression and he was changing my course of treatment from running related therapy to more intensified core work through Pilates.
To add insult to (literal) injury, I was also told to stop engaging my new fitness passion, indoor cycling, because it was likely exacerbating my injury (of course this was right after I finally purchased some cycling shoes).

This was a one-two punch so hard that I almost cried right there in his office. I waited until I got into the car to sob uncontrollably. Great first day of being 43 – not even two steps forward and one step back, I was (and still am) pretty upset. […]
Sounds of Saturday – Kate Bush
No post on Friday due to birthday hangover. It was a great birthday but yesterday I got some lousy news, I’ve had to take a step back in my Physical Therapy due to recurring back pain.
My PT is a running expert and he’s informed me that I will not be close to running for a few weeks for certain. Tomorrow is the Pasadena Rock ‘n’ Roll Mini Marathon (aka 5K) which I will be (sadly) walking instead of running.
However, I will be strong and think of my fighter friends Jon Dephouse (recovering from cancer tumor removal surgery – read
#WholeLottaLove Link Up
I’m participating in the #WholeLottaLove link up post fest at Kludgymom.com, a blog written by the very funny, smart and Jason Mraz-obsessed, Gigi Ross. Gigi is helping bloggers get some extra love for those posts that might have gotten overlooked by a prettier, sexier, richer post in the past.
I added this post that details how I feel that balance in life and not a number on a scale should define who you are as a person.
