After the Sandy Hook incident on Friday, it’s been difficult to write about anything else other than being thankful and/or sad.  Earlier this week I had planned on writing about a recent health journey but that will again be delayed until later this week because I now have something more pressing….my (lower back) injury is back again.

Some of the reason for my recurring back injury – besides arthritis. Image by neckandback

I have been in a cycle of back injury and attaining fitness for a number of years.  I’ve had to pull out of 3 half marathons in as many years and I was on a self-directed program to get myself strong once and for all.  Hence my #13in2013 declaration earlier this week.

I’ve done so many different things to deal with this recurring injury.  I’ve seen kinesiologists (Debbie Parsons in NYC is amazing), sports medicine doctors (Dr. Jordan Metzl who informed me that I have the beginnings of arthritis and gave me a killer workout plan that I found impossible at the time), I take Glucosamine with MSM, tried Arnica cream and through it all I have worked hard on increasing my core strength.

I know I still have a way to go with getting myself fit but I’ve been doing indoor cycling 4-5 days a week at The Cycle Annex with a triathlete coach instructor but perhaps I got too cocky this Friday and took my handlebars down a little too much.

Bottom line is that I’m in pain, NOW.  I have decided that now is also the time to change my former “get strong” practices to get a different result than in the past.

I’m going to try this:

Let’s see what happens.

Tomorrow this blog will be silent (except for a picture) in honor of the Sandy Hook victims, their families and all that were affected.
