Welcome to Tunes For Tuesday!
Today’s Tunes For Tuesday is Spandau Ballet’s “Gold”. Not only has “gold” been on my mind since Wild Boy won 1st place in his elementary school Jog-A-Thon this week (he ran the equivalent of a 10K – – – he’s isn’t even 7 yet) but Spandau’s been in the news recently.

Spandau Ballet just appeared at SXSW with a film premiere and concert and the very lucky Lori Majewski (co-author of the eagerly awaited 1980’s New Wave book and blog “Mad World”) got the chance to interview them (she had some great photos on Instagram) and it reminded me of three things:
1. I’ve always said that Jon Hamm as Don Draper is just a cheap imitation of Tony Hadley in his Spandau hey day.
2. I will always have a special place in my heart for Gary Kemp. He was the first person to ever ask me for my business card (during my brief time working in the music business) and I, of course, didn’t have one but man, I wish I did!
3. It makes me think of Melissa@MizMeliz who loves Spandau like I love Duran Duran. This is for you Melissa!
Enjoy!
What do you think of my Don Draper/Tony Hadley comparison?
You are gold! Thank you for the shout out! I think I will never look at Don Draper the same again. He has the look. So true! Lol!
At the end of my Q&A with Spandau at SXSW, I told them that so whenever someone asks how I enjoyed their first U.S. gig in 28 years, I say, “To cut a long story short, I lost my mind!”
Glad you agree Melissa. It struck me early on watching Mad Men and I think only people who “really get” Spandau see it too.
I’ll admit that with all of the concerts I’ve gone to, I’ve never seen them live. Maybe that will change soon…. Here’s hoping. PS – I’m kind of jealous of that TH hug that you got at SXSW. Then again, I’m sure you have many enchanting stories of my 80’s/90’s music heroes (some of which I’ll read about in your book very, very soon).
Thanks for reading.
I’ve been saying this for years that Don Draper is really designed after Tony Hadley. Style
It’s nice to have Spandau Ballet in the US again
Regards

Glad we agree on the Don Draper/Tony Hadley thing. Have you gotten to see them during this tour? They are pretty fabulous. I got to see them perform at Kimmel in Novmeber and they were fantastic and exceptionally gracious.
