Hey there, it’s Friday’s High Five!
I turned 45 on Saturday and while attempting to convince myself that 45 isn’t that old, it occurred to me that the number 45 has held some great significance and should be celebrated rather than mourned so here’s Friday’s High Five for this week:
1. The 45:
Sure, some of you don’t even know what a 45 is (it’s a record) and it was the first piece of music that I bought with my own money. I was 9 years old and bought “Funkytown” by Lipps, Inc. I played that record to death and even now when I hear it, it makes me smile.
2. 4-5 seconds by Rihanna featuring Kanye West and Paul McCartney:
Do I like this song so much? No, but I liked the number reference so I’m including it in the High 5. How do you feel about this collaboration? Personally, I think it’s strange.
3. Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls number was 45 for one season.
I’m going to my first professional basketball game today (the Brooklyn Nets vs. the LA Lakers). Wild Boy has become obsessed with all things sports and all teams New York so we’re off to the game tonight.
I’ve learned more about professional sports in the last year than in all of my years combined due to my little boy. It is amazing how much my child loves sports – all sports and all sports statistics.
I’m sure when Jay, Wild Boy and I walk into the Staples Center in our Nets gear, we’ll be welcomed with open arms. If I don’t publish on Tuesday, you’ll know what happened to me.
I didn’t know that Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn, did you?
4. 4 more weeks of Physical Therapy x twice a week. I’m calling that 45.
Maybe it’s a stretch to call 4 more weeks (x twice a week) of PT a 45 but I’m calling it that. I went to the orthopedist today and while he said I’m better, I’m not over the hump yet (I’ll also interpret that to mean I’m not over the hill in age either). I’m standing upright but still curved a bit to the right due to my still spasming QL muscle.
I’ll be continuing my PT exercises but I’ll also be exploring some other outlets during this rehabilitation time so stay tuned for more. This is one the orthopedist recommended I try.

5. Duran Duran’s current line-up is kind of 4.5 = 45
Duran Duran were originally a five member band – John, Nick, Simon, Andy and Roger. Andy has left the group and Dom Brown has replaced him but Dom is not an official member of the line-up so in my mind, this 4.5 type of thing is yet another sign of 45 being an awesome and fabulous number.
In case you haven’t read the reviews of the recent WarChildUK concert, it seems that the boys killed it. We are waiting for a similar (or any real show) stateside. Hint! Hint!
I’ll be working in San Diego next week so posting may be sporadic.
I hope to get some blogging done but in case I don’t, consider yourself warned.
How was your week? What was the first single/album/CD that you ever bought?
I had 45s but I can’t for the life of me remember what was my first one. I know my very first LP was Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall.” But the first album that I shelled out my own money for was The Go Go’s “Vacation” – that one with the girls water skiing!
Happy Birthday Melissa! I have be very bad with my blog reading as of late so sorry! I turned 45 on the 4th of this month. I love the list and I love that song, Funkytown. My parents had quite a few 45’s in their record collection.
I’m a Golden State Warriors fan! 🙂 Happy weekend, Melissa. Glad you’re rocking 45!
Happy Birthday Melissa! I think my first 45 was “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” by Culture Club. (And yes, I still play the hell out of it!)
I’m ashamed to say that I don’t remember if I ever had a record player. My brother did. He was always more into music than I was.
Good choices, Jen! My mother looked like Gina Schock (sp?) so I was mesmerized by the “Beauty and The Beat” album by The Go-Go’s.
Congrats fellow 45 year old with a February birthday! Please don’t apologize for being bad with blog reading, I’m pretty awful at it myself. It’s one of the things that always makes me feel bad. I barely find time to write and then I find even less time to read other blogs that I love. I wish there were more hours in the day!
Ashley: I think the GSW are doing well this year, right? My little guy keeps me up to date every day with stats and I believe that your team is always up there. If I’m wrong, forgive me because I’m awful with sports.
A good single for sure! I was sad that CC canceled their tour in the US this fall. I did take a poster off of a wall and bring it home though 😉 I’ve seen them once and loved their show!
I’ll forgive you. Hey, we hung at a Billy Joel concert so you’re still OK in my book 😉
They are doing VERY well! 🙂 Go Dubs!
Yeah, of course Boy George’s voice has to go- can’t do that group without him. I’ve only seen them once- the Rewind Tour in 1997 with Howard Jones and Human League. They were awesome. (Howard Jones, also awesome. Human League, sadly, were not). I still have posters of that man. It’s a good thing I’m single; that would be hell to explain to whomever my partner was. LOL
I went to that tour too! I saw HoJo at the beginning of that tour and then at the end (when he had no voice and had the audience sing for him – it was awesome).
