On This Day in 1994 – Daltrey Sings Townshend (Giveaway)

AC-Cassette-USA-Roger_DaltreyAlmost 20 years ago today, I made it to Carnegie Hall.  Not because of my musical prowess (I have none) or for a Duran show  (I don’t think they’ve ever played there) but as an assistant to the producer of the “Daltrey Sings Townshend” 2 day event celebrating Roger Daltrey’s 50th birthday.

It was my first real job out of college.  I was lucky enough during that time to talk to Roger Daltrey on a a regular basis and to have him sing “Happy Birthday” to me is a cherished memory.  I now curse time for not having (reasonably sized) cell phones with audio and video available so I could replay it at will.  Damn!

This show had a plethora of well-known musicians involved – Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, Eddie Vedder, Sinead O’Connor, Lou Reed, David Sanborn, Alice Cooper, Linda Perry,  The Spin Doctors and The Chieftains.  As a naive 24 year old, I didn’t recognize the greatness until many years later.

Sounds of Saturday – The Alarm

This week’s Sounds of Saturday is the amazing band The Alarm.  I am ashamed that I haven’t featured one of my favorite bands until now.  I’ve been lucky enough to see the band and Mike Peter’s (the band’s lead singer) live more than once.  His voice […]

Sounds of Saturday – Icehouse

In keeping with the theme of love for February, I’m bringing you an Australian band called Icehouse.  You might have heard their song “Electric Blue” or “Crazy” if you were a New Waver like me in the 80’s.

Today’s Sounds of Saturday highlight is “Heartbreak Kid”.  Jay had the 1987 “Man […]

Sounds of Saturday – Beautiful Colours

Today I’ll be running (or walking depending upon what PT says and how my back feels) The Color Run at Dodger Stadium with my fellow Duran friend, Josie.  It’s only fitting that Duran friends doing a race where the object […]

Sounds of Saturday: Barry Manilow: Yes, Barry Manilow

I’m here in Vegas and I decided to feature former lounge singer, Barry Manilow. I love Barry and I don’t care who knows it. I’ve seen him in concert (it was one of the few times in recent memory when I wasn’t one of the oldest people at a […]

An 80's Night Out in L.A.

Music, NY-LA, Duran Duran

The Mint Marquee

Last night I went out for my second “school night” this month and it was a blast.  Two friends of mine and I went to The Mint (established in 1937) to see an 80’s triple bill of tribute (or what I call “cover”) bands: The Curse (The Cure Tribute Band), Rio (Duran Duran Tribute Band) and L.A.vation (U2 Tribute band).

My Friend’s Cover Band started the night with 80’s hits that made me think of dancing with two of my junior high school friends in a basement to Billy Idol.

NY-LA, Music Curse Set List

The first band to go on was The Curse and if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought Robert Smith was singing.  Brian Soto was slightly made up to look like a young Robert but his voice was dead on.  Musically, these guys were terrific and I’d definitely see them again.  One of my friends with me is a tremendous Cure fan and even she approved.
