Sounds of Saturday: Barry Manilow: Yes, Barry Manilow

I’m here in Vegas and I decided to feature former lounge singer, Barry Manilow. I love Barry and I don’t care who knows it. I’ve seen him in concert (it was one of the few times in recent memory when I wasn’t one of the oldest people at a concert) and I plan to see him again at the famed Hollywood Bowl in June. I’m in Vegas now and it reminds me that I did miss him perform here but a good friend saw him and said he was amazing.

Continuing the Sounds of Saturday January theme of firsts, this […]

Maybe Vegas Baby, Maybe Not.

I think my family might be the reason travel insurance was invented.  Wild Boy has only been alive a few years but he’s managed to put a monkey wrench in just about every travel plan we’ve ever made as a family since his arrival – vomiting and fever 3 hours into a 24 hour car trip, flu that delayed a cross country trip , a wicked fever and infection after a stay at Disney World that had us delay our trip home twice […]

An 80's Night Out in L.A.

Music, NY-LA, Duran Duran

The Mint Marquee

Last night I went out for my second “school night” this month and it was a blast.  Two friends of mine and I went to The Mint (established in 1937) to see an 80’s triple bill of tribute (or what I call “cover”) bands: The Curse (The Cure Tribute Band), Rio (Duran Duran Tribute Band) and L.A.vation (U2 Tribute band).

My Friend’s Cover Band started the night with 80’s hits that made me think of dancing with two of my junior high school friends in a basement to Billy Idol.

NY-LA, Music Curse Set List

The first band to go on was The Curse and if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought Robert Smith was singing.  Brian Soto was slightly made up to look like a young Robert but his voice was dead on.  Musically, these guys were terrific and I’d definitely see them again.  One of my friends with me is a tremendous Cure fan and even she approved.

In The Name of Love

I know that this is not Saturday but it will be a video post today in celebration of the legal public holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King and the public inauguration of President Barak Obama.

It seems strange that racial segregation in the United States was legal until the Civil Rights Act of 1964, only 6 years before I was born.

Wild Boy was deeply effected (or is it affected?) when he learned about MLK in preschool.  He was incredulous to learn about segregation and how different things would be for him and his friends if it existed now.  Wild Boy learned […]

Sounds of Saturday – The Go-Go's

Keeping with my first concert, I had to share a video from The Go-Go’s. I can remember how much I loved them in the 1980’s.

Could anyone be more beautiful than Belinda Carlisle? Cooler than Kathy Valentine? Cuter than Jane Wiedlin? More fierce than Gina Schock? I also remember thinking at the time that my mother looked like Charlotte Caffey too.

I was lucky enough to see The Go-Go’s on their recent tour in NYC and they were fantastic. I hope to see them again in the future. Enjoy and see you Monday!

Does A Number On A Scale Define You?

Weight Loss, Diet, New Year's Resolutions, Balance, Fitness, Food & Nutrition

I’m betting the answer to the above question has been “yes” at one time or another, maybe even now.  We’re in mid-January, the beginning of the “fitness season” (read: weight loss season) and a plethora of people are stepping on scales in their bathrooms, gyms or any other place that they think might have a “better” scale to determine their self worth.

My last post here was about how I feel about the word about the word diet.  It’s now time to come clean about how I feel about scales:

Unless you are following a doctor’s specific order to lose weight (or weight management) to optimize your health, I do NOT believe in weighing yourself on a frequent basis (daily or even weekly; monthly is only slightly tolerable).

As a dietitian, I fully understand the importance of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight for the general public and for those with diabetes.  (I even have a Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management from the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in addition to being a Certified Diabetes Educator).  Personally and professionally, I just can’t support the culture of dieting and scale obsession.
