A NY Sweetheart – Loren Brill

When starting this blog, I never intended to feature women that inspire me but I’ve been lucky to have found a number of women that have blown me away like Rachael Faught from glassofwin.com, Julie Flygare from JulieFlygare.com, Erica Sara from ericasaradesigns.com – whom I haven’t featured yet but should – that I might make this a regular feature on the blog.

Today I’m featuring, Loren Brill, founder and CEO of SweetLorens.comone of my favorite discoveries from the Natural Products Expo/Expo West a few weeks ago.   SweetLorens.com is New York based company featuring all-natural ready-to-bake cookies and brownies made with 100% whole grains and natural sweeteners, and do not contain dairy products or preservatives.

Adventures In Fitness

8578224725_c6a97f6baa_nBeing injured is no fun.  It usually means you’re not able to do to the things you most often do to stay fit.  I haven’t been able to run or cycle since December.

Since my injury, it’s been hard to be strong in mind and body.  I’ve been using Pilates, Core Balance Water Therapy and heated vinyasa yoga to help strengthen my core muscles to aid in getting my mind and body strong again.

Oakley Progression SessionA few weeks ago, I went to the Shape Magazine/Oakley Women’s VIP Progression Session and Ambassador Search Event in San Diego and learned some new ways to stay fit and healthy (even while injured) from some of the current Oakley Ambassadors.

First, we got a chance to do a Bombshell Bootcamp with Cari and Carrie from Houston, Texas.  I didn’t plan on being in the front row and modifying every move but these powerhouse chicks didn’t seem to mind.  We definitely broke a sweat and were warmed up. […]

Back in January, Oakley, the maker of premium sunglasses, goggles, prescription eyewear, apparel, footwear and accessories and Shape Magazine teamed together for a contest to find the next Oakley Brand Ambassadors in three major markets, San Diego, Boulder and Dallas.

As part of the search and contest to find the right women to join the Oakley Perform Beautifully Collective200 lucky women were being offered the chance to be invited to attend an exclusive day-long VIP Oakley Progression Session which would include a Boot Camp session, a Yoga Session, a Nutrition Seminar, a Live Ambassador Search with Oakley and access to the mobile O-store to check out the latest offerings from Oakley plus product giveaways!

I got the chance to know the Oakley product while at my first social media event, the Fitness Magazine Meet & Tweet last year.  I received a pair of Oakley sunglasses as a gift at the event and I’ve done all of my running with them ever since.  When I saw the details of the contest, I entered but never believed I’d get one of those 200 invitations.

I’m happy to say that I was wrong!  I’m in shock that I’m one of the 200 lucky winners who have been invited to the Women’s Fitness Training Progression Session in San Diego next week!  It seems unreal that I’m a contender to be one of the next Oakley Brand Ambassadors! […]

You Dropped A Bomb On Me, Baby!

Nope, not pregnant.  Had you thinking there for a minute though, right?

I couldn’t help but sing the 1982’s The Gap Band song “You Dropped A Bomb On Me” in my head after hearing the devastating news from my orthopedist that I will not be running the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half Marathon on June 2nd. […]

A Fly (Runner) Girl – Julie Flygare

Running, Narcolepsy, Julie FlygareI have a new inspiration, Julie Flygare.  She is the author of the book, “Wide Awake And Dreaming: A Memoir of Narcolepsy”.  I never thought that a book that I downloaded to keep me occupied on a train ride would rouse me with the story of a smart, strong female runner, blogger and yogi.

I’ve always liked books about people who find their way in the face of an obstacle of some sort – addiction, poor parent guidance, financial struggles, injuries, disabilities or in the case of Julie Flygare, the neurological disease narcolepsy, which she was diagnosed with in her twenties while in law school.

I have my own sleep issues (I’m an insomniac) but I knew very little about narcolepsy and nothing about cataplexy – the sudden loss of muscle tone often brought on by strong emotions.

By reading Julie’s book, I learned more about the neurological autoimmune sleep disorder that affects 1 in 2,000 Americans (including talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel ).  The disorder is caused by the brain’s inability to maintain normal sleep and wake cycles.  See here for more Narcolepsy Quick Facts from Julie’s blog. (Rock 'n') Roll With The Changes

Rock 'n' Roll Mini Marathon

Sunday, February 17th was the Pasadena Rock ‘n’ Roll Mini Marathon (aka 5K).  This was definitely a race that I planned to run but my PT directed otherwise and I was pretty disappointed.

To add to my already lousy mood, I was missing my regular finish line cheering squad (Jay and Wild Boy).  I told them to stay home due to ridiculously early parking requirements (I’m going to blame the early start time for helping me to forget my sunglasses and hat as well).

The morning was cool but sunny.  Before the race, I got to see my very race-happy friends Joan and Michele from The Cycle Annex and the Pasadena Tri Club who were running the Half Marathon and I was lucky enough to get the chance to meet the very speedy and inspirational, Rock ‘n’ Blogger, PavementRunner at the start line (maybe he’ll post the picture he took of us).

I had some wonderful inspiration for this race, my new friend from my cycling class, Jericca – she was running her first 5K with her nephew.   […]
